No Ring, No Problem: How to Book Your Maldives Honeymoon Solo
So youโve decided to stop waiting and book your own honeymoon-for-one. ๐โจ The Maldives may look like the ultimate couplesโ destination, but I promise itโs just as magical (if not more) when itโs all about you.
Taking yourself on a honeymoon might sound intimidating, but it doesnโt have to be. From planning your dream stay to navigating those solo jitters once you arrive, hereโs everything you need to know to make your Maldives honeymoon-for-one unforgettable.
Planning the Trip ๐ โ โWhat kind of honeymoon are you giving yourself?โ
Start with your objective (aka: whatโs your vibe?)
Spoken like any event planner, Iโll say it again: start with your objectives and goals. What do you want to feel and experience on this honeymoon-for-one? Wellness and spa bliss? Adventure and excursions? Pure, lazy luxury?
For me, there were two non-negotiables: an overwater bungalow and an underwater restaurant. ๐ฆ๐พ For you, maybe itโs snorkeling, island excursions, or spending all day at the spa. Whatever it is, define it now โ because the Maldives is made up of around 200 inhabited islands, many of which are home to just a single resort. Island-hopping isnโt really a thing here, so youโll want to pick a resort that checks all your boxes.
Budget vs. Dream (and the plot twist of reality)
Yes, you can spend $20k a night if you want to (and if thatโs you, I love that for you, babe ๐ฅ). But there are also fabulous resorts at a fraction of the cost.
Hereโs what I learned: my initial budget didnโt line up with my dreamy โmust-haves.โ So I had to make a choice โ lower my expectations or stretch my budget. I chose to stretch, but you get to decide what works for you.
๐ก Tip: Search using sites like Booking.com to filter for your must-haves within your price range. And now, you can search Booking.com directly through ChatGPT โ talk about making trip planning easy! If youโre not quite there yet, book further out to give yourself time to save.
Saving & Timing Your Trip
My favorite method? Figure out the estimated cost, then divide that number by how many paychecks youโll have before your trip. Set aside that amount each time, and suddenly the impossible feels totally doable.
As for when to go: peak season is DecemberโApril (sunny, dry, $$$). Both times I went were in August/September โ technically wetter months โ and guess what? Gorgeous weather and better prices. Sure, a few tropical storms rolled through, but they passed quickly.
One of my favorite memories ever was sitting on the balcony of my overwater bungalow, champagne in hand, watching lightning dance across the ocean. โจ Honestly? Worth the discount.
Ok, Time to Book! ๐ฅ
After all the budget crunching and endless photo scrolling, I found my perfect match: Komandoo. ๐ A gorgeous, intimate, all-inclusive resort with overwater bungalows, an adults-only vibe (yes please), and a sister property โ Hurawalhi โ just a 10-minute boat ride away with an underwater restaurant. For me, it ticked every single box.
I canโt recommend Komandoo enough โ itโs on the more affordable side for the Maldives (weโre still talking luxury, babe), and the experience was nothing short of magical. And I havenโt even touched on how incredible all of the staff are, but weโll come back to that at a later post! But hereโs the thing: your perfect resort might look different. Spa-focused, bigger and buzzier, diving-centric โ choose the one that matches your dream honeymoon-for-one.
Where to Book: Insider Tip
I love using sites like Booking.com to compare options and narrow down choices, but hereโs the truth: booking direct often gets you a better deal. Even if it doesnโt look like it at first glance, check the fine print โ inclusions like meals, transfers, and taxes can make direct bookings better value (and sometimes come with perks like complimentary upgrades or spa credits).
Travel Logistics Made Easy โ๏ธ
Visas: None required for most nationalities (yay!).
Travel insurance: Always a good idea, especially for something this far-flung.
Flights: Youโll fly into Malรฉ (the capital). From there, most resorts arrange your transfer โ either a seaplane โ๏ธ or a speedboat ๐ค depending on the islandโs location.
If youโre staying somewhere like Komandoo, youโll probably get a seaplane transfer that lands you either directly at your resort or on a floating platform in the middle of the ocean (yes, really). From there, a boat whisks you away. It sounds wild, but trust me โ itโs an experience in itself and one of the most surreal, fabulous โI canโt believe Iโm hereโ moments of the trip.
โจ Tip: Pack patience for travel days. Between international flights, seaplanes, and boats, it can easily take 24โ30 hours door to door. But the payoff? Youโll soon find outโฆ
โWelcome to your honeymoon, party of one.โ
That first moment of arrival
After what feels like a lifetime (and far too many layovers), youโll see it โ that impossibly turquoise water that almost doesnโt look real. Excitement floods in. Youโll take a deep, grounding breath of Indian Ocean air and think, I actually did it.
But as you start exploring the island and realize you truly are alone in a sea of couples, another familiar feeling might creep in: insecurity.
Are they looking at me? Wondering why Iโm here alone? Feeling sorry for me?
Chances are, theyโre too wrapped up in their own romantic bubble to notice. But on the off chance they do โ remember: people may stare, but most are secretly thinking, โDamn, I wish I had the courage to do that.โ
Tips for settling in
When those moments hit, take a deep breath and ground yourself. Remind yourself: this is about you.
Create small rituals that anchor you โ a champagne breakfast for one, journaling in the morning, dressing up for dinner just because you can. My favorite Maldives ritual? Watching the sunrise and later lying on my balcony at night to stargaze. It was grounding, humbling, and the ultimate reminder to be present.
When nerves creep in, reframe: youโre not missing out โ youโre claiming space others donโt even dare to take.
Lean into your honeymoon energy
Once youโve worked through those first-day jitters, itโs time to lean all the way in.
๐ธ Do a solo photoshoot at the resortโs most picturesque spots using a tripod or the resort photographer. Or, if youโre like me, get resourceful โ prop your phone against a wine bottle, switch it to video, and screenshot your best moments later. (Honestly, I should post a tutorial for that one. ๐)
๐ Say yes to excursions โ cocktail classes, snorkeling, jewelry-making, windsurfing, scuba diving. I failed miserably my first time trying to dive at Komandoo, but later, after a great experience in Australia, I went back and got my scuba certification in the Maldives. Now itโs one of my favorite hobbies.
๐๐ผโโ๏ธ Treat yourself unapologetically. Book the spa day, splurge on the fancy dinner, order champagne โjust because.โ Youโve earned it. Youโve worked hard to get here.
This trip is about showing up for yourself the way youโd hope a partner would โ and realizing that you already can.
After Leaving โ Until the Next One ๐
And just like that, itโs time to trade turquoise water for airport security lines. Youโll be salty โ literally and emotionally โ scrolling through your camera roll wondering, how am I supposed to go back to real life after that?
Youโll leave with a tan, three thousand photos, and a heart thatโs a little fuller than when you arrived. And maybe, just maybe, a new kind of love story โ the one you wrote for yourself.
Et voilร ! We remind ourselves that lifeโs greatest romance will always be the one you have with yourself. ๐๐ด
